Identify the exact system before buying or inserting pods
Capsule and pod systems are not interchangeable. Nespresso Original and Vertuo use different capsules and brewing systems; other brands have their own formats. Match both the machine model and the capsule's stated compatibility. Never force a pod into a chamber because it looks similar.
A capsule fixes much of the coffee dose and grind for you. The useful controls are the capsule choice, the machine's supported serving program, and what you add afterward. A printed intensity number is not a laboratory caffeine measurement.

An exact example: Original Pixie C61/D61
This example refers to the linked Pixie manual, not every capsule machine. Its factory programs are 40 ml Espresso and 110 ml Lungo. Programmed settings may have been changed on a used machine, so measure one output if the cup seems unexpectedly long.
- Fill the clean tank with fresh cold potable water and seat it correctly.
- Switch on and wait for the ready indication. Use the manual's rinse procedure after first setup or extended non-use.
- Insert an undamaged compatible capsule, close the lever fully and place a suitable cup under the outlet.
- Select Espresso or Lungo as intended for the capsule. The machine stops at its programmed amount; do not lift the lever during extraction.
- After brewing stops, remove the drink and eject the used capsule as directed. Keep fingers clear of the capsule mechanism.
- Empty used capsules and the drip tray, clean the outlet and follow the model's care instructions.
Make a longer or milkier cup without guessing
For a short capsule coffee that tastes balanced but too concentrated, brew its intended small serving and add hot water afterward. That is a different choice from forcing more water through the same spent capsule.
For an Original-style milk drink, start with one approximately 40 ml serving and 100 ml separately warmed or textured milk. For a larger, more coffee-forward drink, use two fresh servings rather than trying to extract one pod repeatedly. These are serving starting points, not equivalences to an 18 g café espresso.
For iced coffee, brew the intended portion into a heat-safe vessel, then add a measured cold liquid and ice. Count milk and eventual ice melt when comparing strength. Vertuo drink volumes depend on the compatible capsule and supported machine; use the specific manual rather than the Pixie numbers.

Taste changes and machine faults need different fixes
Start with a fresh capsule and a clean machine when comparing flavor. Reusing a spent capsule changes the coffee extracted and may conflict with the device instructions.
| Observation | Next step |
|---|---|
| Balanced but too strong | Add water or milk after brewing. |
| Weak or watery | Check whether the serving program was lengthened; use the capsule's intended volume or a fresh second capsule. |
| Harsh after a long extraction | Try the intended shorter serving, then dilute separately. |
| Little or no flow | Check tank seating and water level, then the manual's rinse/descale procedure. Do not run the pump dry repeatedly. |
| Capsule is stuck or lever will not close | Stop. Do not force the lever or reach into a powered mechanism; follow the model's fault instructions. |
| Leak, damaged cord or unusual electrical behavior | Stop using the appliance and arrange appropriate service. |
| Milk system smells stale | Clean removable milk parts promptly according to their separate instructions. |
| Coffee is lukewarm | Wait for the ready indication and follow the model's permitted warmup or rinse. Warm a suitable cup separately; do not put hot water into the tank or alter the machine's controls beyond its manual. |
| Same capsule gives inconsistent amounts | Measure several actual outputs using the same cup setting; check tank seating and whether that program was changed. Follow the manual's reset or service guidance rather than treating every change as a coffee-dose problem. |
Follow the cleaning and descaling sequence for the model
Routine cleaning removes coffee and milk residue; descaling addresses mineral deposits. Use approved products and the exact rinse sequence. Do not substitute an unverified vinegar procedure or immerse the powered machine.
Use the local capsule collection route only if it accepts the specific capsule material and format. An aluminium-looking pod is not automatically accepted in every household recycling stream. Empty, rinse or separate it only as the collection program asks.
