Plan a first roast with the exact machine manual

A first batch should teach you the controls, observable changes and cooling procedure. The machine’s complete manual supplies its operating limits.

Match the model, electricity supply and manual version

Read the model and regional markings on the actual machine. Locate its current complete manual through the maker’s support page, record the version and date in your log, and resolve conflicting instructions with the manufacturer before starting. Similar product names can hide different controls or electrical configurations.

This guide’s Behmor example is based on the 2000AB Plus 120V document identified inside the PDF as V30, 21 October 2024. Its download filename still contains V28. The separate 2020SR 220V manual is a different document; the example below must not be applied to it. Coffee Jacob has not tested these machines.

Behmor 2000AB Plus 120V: the documented beginner path

Read the full V30 manual, particularly safeguards (pp. 2–4), preparation (p. 7), automatic profiles (p. 8) and cooling (pp. 10–11). Use a stable heat-resistant indoor surface, 46 cm clearance on every side and above, ventilation and no extension cord. High-chaff coffees are prohibited. Remain present throughout.

  1. Prepare the new machine as p. 7 describes, including its empty 1/4-lb/START preparation cycle and complete cooling.
  2. Begin with 1/4 lb green coffee. Secure the drum clasp and fit drum and chaff tray exactly as the manual’s diagrams show; close the door.
  3. For a permitted P1-listed coffee, such as a Colombian lot, press 1/4 then START. Other coffees require their listed automatic profile.
  4. Watch the roast and acknowledge the flashing unattended-safety countdown with START within its 30-second window.
  5. Press COOL to finish. Never pass ten seconds into second crack; heavy smoke requires immediate cooling.
  6. For bean ignition, switch off and unplug; keep the door closed until cooled and never add water.
  7. Complete normal cooling, then handle and clean as directed. Allow one hour between roasts.

Prepare three observations before pressing start

Use a supplier-identified, permitted coffee and keep enough of the same lot for a repeat. Before roasting, write the exact batch mass, automatic profile and a simple learning question: “Can I distinguish early pops from a sustained first-crack sequence?” Listen to the real crack examples beforehand so that an unfamiliar sound is not your only reference.

Prepare three blank fields: first clear change in appearance; isolated and sustained sound observations; cooling action and its reason. If a cue is uncertain, record that uncertainty. The purpose is to learn how this coffee presents in this machine. Do not try to match a competitor’s displayed temperature or a fictional log’s times.

Keep the log short enough that writing does not distract from operating the machine. Detailed photographs, calculations and taste notes belong after prescribed cooling. An experienced instructor or the manufacturer is the appropriate source for uncertain operation, rather than improvising around an unexpected warning.

Fresh Roast SR540/SR800: verify the startup procedure

Use Home Roasting Supplies’ current manuals and its SR800 getting-started demonstration. The maker shows aligning the chamber locating dimples, fitting the top assembly and using the knob to select fan, heat and time before RUN/COOL. Changing fan behavior changes both bean movement and heating; a stock chamber and an extension-tube arrangement are different setups.

Published SR800 instructions do not all describe the same startup default. The maker’s current page shows Fan 1/Heat 9/6 minutes and then directs users to change it; an older operating sheet shows Fan 5/Heat 9/6 minutes. A stored default is not a complete roast recipe. Confirm the exact revision and beginner load with the manufacturer, especially if the machine or chamber differs. The page’s demonstration is a model-specific example, not a guaranteed schedule for every coffee.

Before a first roast, identify how to enter cooling, what completion looks like and when handling is permitted in your manual. Watch the manufacturer’s demonstration all the way through that part. Only then use the same three observation fields described above.

Turn the batch into a repeatable learning record

After prescribed cooling, label the finished batch with coffee, roast date and your batch identifier. Weigh the cooled coffee consistently, record any spilled beans separately, and use the roast-log worksheet to calculate mass loss. Photograph the sample under the same lighting you will use next time.

Taste with a written brewing recipe at recorded rest intervals, then keep the first comparison modest: repeat the same permitted batch and program before changing several controls. If you dislike the result, use the diagnostic checks to separate an equipment problem, a possible roast issue, an unsuitable coffee and a brewing change. You have completed a useful first experiment when you can explain what you did and what you will repeat.
